The Tree That Changed Direction: What Was Hidden in Ziro’s Forest?

Published on: March 24, 2025 | Views: 175

Tucked in the sacred hills of Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, lies what many believe to be the world’s tallest naturally formed Shivling—a sacred formation that remained hidden until one fateful day in July 2004, when the forest whispered its secret.

Today, the site is no longer unknown. It is a temple, a pilgrimage destination, and a symbol of divine presence that continues to draw both devotees and curious travelers alike.

The Tree That Changed Direction

🪓 On 14th July 2004, during the holy month of Shravan, Prem Subha, a Nepali woodcutter, was chopping wood in the forest.
But just as he felled a tree, it miraculously changed direction mid-air, falling away from a large stone formation.

Disturbed by what he saw, Prem called others to the site. What they discovered next left everyone speechless.

A Shivling Beneath the Earth

Under layers of bushes and earth, they uncovered a massive, naturally formed Shivling—towering, untouched, and coiled with a snake-like stone formation.
Unlike sculpted idols found in temples, this was not man-made. It was nature itself.

As the news spread, the site slowly transformed into a place of reverence and worship. The Shivling of Ziro had revealed itself.

Prophecy in the Pages of the Shiv Puran?

What shocked many scholars and priests was a chilling alignment with an ancient scripture.

📜 In the 17th chapter of the 9th section of the Shiv Puran, it is written that the world’s tallest natural Shivling will rise in the form of two stone pillars (Stambhs) in a place known as Lingalay, which in time will be called Arunachal.

Was this sacred text referring to Ziro all along?

From Discovery to Devotion

Today, the Ziro Shivling is no longer just a mysterious rock in the forest—
🛕 It is a recognized temple.
🌄 Pilgrims visit it throughout the year, especially during Shravan and Mahashivratri.
📿 Locals offer flowers, water, and prayers to what they call a living symbol of Lord Shiva.

Even though its origin was strange and unexpected, the faith around it has only grown stronger.

Mystery or Divine Revelation?

Why did that tree refuse to fall where it should have?
Why was the Shivling never noticed earlier, despite its size?
And did the ancients already know this sacred stone would rise here?

Ziro’s Shivling may now be a temple, but its discovery still feels like a page torn from mythology—brought to life.
